The Canaries faced Redditch United in a big game down at Top Field which could have lifted Hitchin three points closer to safety and also could have pulled Redditch out of the relegation picture. The home side hadn’t been on the greatest form since hammering St Ives Town 4-0 at home in mid-January but Mark Burke was looking for this to change. Redditch on the other hand had drawn their last 3 games.
With not much action in the first the game was cagey and neither side were willing to make the first move. Shortly after the restart Hitchin scored with a great team goal finished off by the head of Colchester United loanee Jacob Hutchinson. This was a massive goal for the Canaries and a Valentine’s gift for the supporters.
Redditch then began to push for a goal for the first time in the game and much to the visiting supporters delight they equalised with seven minutes left on the clock through a fantastic goal from Dan Sweeney. The game resulted in a 1-1 draw which could prove to be quite damaging in both team’s season since it could quite easily have gone either way.
Hitchin Town remain bottom in 21st with Biggleswade Town and Lowestoft Town also occupying the relegation zone. Biggleswade and Hitchin both have 24 points from 28 games and Lowestoft had 26 from 28. Tamworth are 18th with 29 points from 27 but Nuneaton Borough just sit above them with 29 from 30 and their survival hopes aren’t looking too promising despite a change in form. Redditch are 15th with 32 points but with Bromsgrove Sporting just behind with 2 games in hand.
